Transnational Corporations Fighting for Stake in the Smart Grid

Today’s alternative energy news keys off of another acquisition in the increasingly competitive smart grid area. What is more important is that the dollars at stake here are literally billions and billions.

France’s Schneider Electric SA (OTC: SBGSY) has offered to acquire Spain-based Telvent GIT, S.A. (NASDAQ: TLVT) for $2 billion.

Schneider, along with ABB Ltd. (NYSE: ABB), France’s Alstom SA (OTC: ALSMY), General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE), and Siemens AG (NYSE: SI) are major players in the nascent buildout of the smart grid.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has estimated could cost nearly half a trillion dollars in the US alone. That’s enough money to be worth fighting over.

And that’s what these players have been doing, using their stacks of cash to acquire strategic components of the smart grid. Telvent, for example, offers real-time monitoring services for utilities to help balance electricity load. Doesn’t sound like a big deal, but the amount of electricity flowing to the grid is now calculated, not measured. Monitoring equipment like that from Telvent will give a utility a more accurate picture of load, and enable more efficient generation. Better monitoring will also help avoid costly blackouts and brownouts.

The First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge Smart Grid Infrastructure (NASDAQ: GRID) ETF is too thinly traded to even matter for most investors. What does matter here in this ETF is that any or almost all of the fund’s small and mid-sized weighting components could find themselves under fire from an acquirer if they can be quickly integrated and then scaled for broader distribution.

ABB paid $3.1 billion in Janurary to acquire precision motor maker Baldor Electric and GE spent $3.2 billion to get 90% of French automation equipment firm Converteam. Siemens is looking to spend up to $4.3 billion on “bolt-on” acquisitions this year. Siemens has not yet participated in the buying spree, but it will likely have to do a deal or two if it wants to stay in the smart grid game.

These companies understand the stakes in the smart grid game and they also understand the utilities. Big utilities are wary of buying technology from start-ups and other small companies, but are willing to buy the same thing from ABB, GE, Schneider, or Siemens because these companies have a history and a track record. The risk that a company like GE will fold is very small, which means that it will be around to maintain and upgrade any systems it installs.

When it comes to M&A in the smart grid, the questions should probably point to “when” rather than “if” more deals are coming.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. It’s an old lesson that smart meter companies and utilities are learning the hard way as some of the country’s first smart grid pilots get underway.

Smart meters, unlike traditional meters, analyze home energy use for time-of-day pricing and send the data to customers and utilities to help them better manage their energy use and supply. While that knowledge can help customers save money, the technology is under fire in California and Texas, where lawsuits and scores of complaints are accusing utilities of using the new meters to inflate their customers’ bills.

The meters allow utilities to see if customers are using energy during peak-load times and charge them accordingly under specified plans. That means careful customers can save money by opting to use their high-energy appliances, such as dishwashers and clothes dryers, during off-peak times.

But with consumer education lagging behind smart grid rollouts, thousands of customers haven't taken advantage of the information and instead have been left thinking that their utility is just price gouging in the name of energy efficiency. Some think it’s a scam cooked up by the utilities; others assume the meters are inaccurate.

The utilities claim that bill increases can be explained by a number of factors, namely increased energy use, energy use during peak-load periods and a colder winter this year. After all, they say, smart meters have been deployed by the millions throughout the world, with few complaints from customers, so clearly the technology is not the problem.

Customers aren’t buying it.

California Complaints

In late 2009, Northern California utility Pacific Gas & Electric found itself in the middle of a lawsuit accusing it of false advertising.

The utility had told its customers that the smart meters it was installing in their homes would help them save money on their electric bills. When some bills went up instead, hundreds of PG&E customers filed formal complaints with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). One Bakersfield resident, Pete Flores, sued the utility, claiming his electricity bill had jumped from about $200 a month to over $500 a month once a smart meter was installed in his house, with no change to his energy use.

The CPUC moved to investigate the claims, and PG&E stopped installing meters in Bakersfield. Now, several months (and more complaints) later, that investigation is officially underway: The CPUC announced this week that it had hired The Structure Group to conduct an independent evaluation.

In California, the CPUC had already authorized Southern California Edison to install approximately 5.3 million new smart meters, San Diego Gas & Electric to install about 1.4 million electric smart meters and 900,000 natural gas meters, and PG&E to install about 5 million electric meters and 4.2 million natural gas meters.

Since these smart meter rollouts began in 2009, the CPUC says it has received about 600 complaints, almost all from PG&E’s service area. In addition to evaluating the smart meters in the San Joaquin Valley, the origin of most of the complaints, the CPUC has asked its independent investigator to evaluate meters throughout PG&E’s territory.

Trouble in Texas

While PG&E submits to an investigation of its meters this week, Dallas-area utility Oncor is preparing to deal with its own smart meter investigation.

The utility has installed about 760,000 meters in its customers’ homes, and complaints to the Texas Public Utilities Commission have increased tenfold in the year since the installations began, all focused on large increases to bills.

The utility claims the increases are due to an unusually cool winter in the region, especially when compared with last year’s unseasonably warm winter. When Oncor ran a side-by-side test of its smart meters and the “dumb” meters it used to use on several homes in its service area, the results showed energy use readings to be the same on both meters, but customers wanted more proof. The commission will now conduct an independent test of Oncor’s meters to determine whether they are functioning properly.

“We’re enthusiastically supporting the testing program so that we can eliminate any seeds of doubt about the accuracy of these meters in consumers’ minds,” said Bob Shapard, Oncor’s chairman and CEO.

"Once we get these concerns behind us, all of us can get focused on the real cause of the high bills and help consumers address that."

Both utilities use Landis + Gyr smart meters, so the court cases and investigations aren’t doing any public relations favors for that company. Stan March, senior vice president of communications for Landis + Gyr, has been reminding the media (and consumers) that the Swiss company has successfully rolled out millions of smart meters around the globe.

Clearly, these two cases are relevant far beyond the borders of Texas and California.

At stake is not just the reputation of any single company or utility, but of the smart grid experiment in general. If customers begin to see smart meters as just a tool utilities use to price-gouge, they’re not at all likely to engage with the meters, or the applications attached to them, in a positive way.

Security Concerns

Unfortunately, rate hikes aren’t the only consumer concern associated with smart meters. Several consumer groups have pointed out that the meters pose security risks, as well.

While companies like Silver Spring and Cisco, which are building much of the networks that smart meters and various smart grid applications will work on, insist security issues are under control, industry analysts and consumer advocates aren’t so sure.

Joshua Wright, a senior security analyst with InGuardians Inc., said in a recent report that smart meters can be hacked without a utility company knowing, and that the communications infrastructure between homes, meters and utilities is often weak. Hackers could break in remotely to shut down someone's power, raise or lower bills or even steal data from the utility company, according to Wright.

The same issues arose in the early days of the Internet, but while some analysts cite that fact as evidence that more needs to be done on smart grid security, the big tech players in smart grid largely claim the work done years ago to secure the Internet can be easily transferred to the smart grid.

“Internet Protocol [IP, the official communication standard of the smart grid] has been around for many years and there are already many mission-critical networks that run on IP,” says Inbar Lasser-Raab, senior director of network systems at Cisco. “We’ve dealt with those [security] issues many years ago.”

Nonetheless, so long as the media, analysts and consumer groups are talking about the security risks of smart meters, consumers aren’t likely to be comfortable having the meters installed in their homes.

Educating the Public

The negative press surrounding smart meters was part of the impetus for the recent formation of the Smart Grid Consumer Coalition, which is charged with educating consumers about all things smart grid in the hopes of engaging them in modernizing the grid and using energy more efficiently.

“Almost every week right now there’s a consumer group coming out saying they’re concerned about the accuracy of smart meters,” says Richard Walker, CEO of home automation company Control4. “We need to make it clear to consumers what the value of the smart grid is, why they should care, what they can do to reduce their bills. We need to encourage them to participate.”

The results of the Texas investigation are scheduled for release before the summer, while the California investigation is expected to take four months.

In the meantime, CPUC said in a statement about the investigation:

“It is premature to put a moratorium on smart meter installations before we have the results of the independent investigation. There are millions of smart meters installed and operating around the globe with no complaints. In addition, a moratorium would involve costs to consumers for ramping down installation and re-starting at a later date that we cannot determine are warranted at this time.”

The thing is, smart meters, despite the fact that they’re linked into the smart grid — a term that has come to have a futuristic, cutting-edge connotation — are pretty simple pieces of digital technology. They gather and transmit information to an analytic software package that makes that information actionable.

It’s highly unlikely that hundreds of thousands of meters would be inaccurate. However, if customers are given smart meters without any education about how to take control of their energy use, how to do a home energy audit, or to determine which times of the day electricity prices are highest, it makes sense their bills will go up. And in that case, customers are right to blame the utility — not because the smart meters are broken or because the utility is out to get them, but because the utilities have largely failed to explain how smart meters work.

'Smart' Electricity Meters at Risk

Computer-security researchers say new "smart" meters that are designed to help deliver electricity more efficiently also have flaws that could let hackers tamper with the power grid in previously impossible ways.

At the very least, the vulnerabilities open the door for attackers to jack up strangers' power bills. These flaws also could get hackers a key step closer to exploiting one of the most dangerous capabilities of the new technology, which is the ability to remotely turn someone else's power on and off.

The attacks could be pulled off by stealing meters, which can be situated outside of a home, and reprogramming them. Or an attacker could sit near a home or business and wirelessly hack the meter from a laptop, said Joshua Wright, a senior security analyst with InGuardians Inc. The firm was hired by three utilities to study their smart meters' resistance to attack.

These utilities, which he would not name, have already done small deployments of smart meters and plan to roll the technology out to hundreds of thousands of power customers, Mr. Wright told the Associated Press.

There is no evidence the security flaws have been exploited, although Mr. Wright said a utility could have been hacked without knowing it. InGuardians said it is working with the utilities to fix the problems.

Power companies are aggressively rolling out the new meters. In the U.S. alone, more than 8 million smart meters have been deployed by electric utilities and nearly 60 million should be in place by 2020, according to a list of publicly announced projects kept by the Edison Foundation, an organization focused on the electric industry.

Unlike traditional electric meters that merely record power use -- and then must be read in person once a month by a meter reader -- smart meters measure consumption in real time. By being networked to computers in electric utilities, the new meters can signal people or their appliances to take certain actions, such as reducing power usage when electricity prices spike.

But the very interactivity that makes smart meters so attractive also makes them vulnerable to hackers, because each meter essentially is a computer connected to a vast network.

There are few public studies on the meters' resistance to attack, in part because the technology is new. However, last summer, Mike Davis, a researcher from IOActive Inc., showed how a computer worm could hop between meters in a power grid with smart meters, giving criminals control over those meters.

Alan Paller, director of research for the SANS Institute, a security research and training organization that was not involved in Mr. Wright's work with InGuardians, said it proved that hacking smart meters is a serious concern ...

Overcoming Obstacles to a Smart Grid Future

As the United States sped along the Information Superhighway through the 1990s, it left its electricity grid in the dust.

Now, energy efficiency has become an imperative, and momentum is building to merge information and power into a smart grid that can promote energy efficiency and savings.

Miami became the one of the largest U.S. cities to embrace that shift last month when it announced it would invest $200 million in smart meters for homes. Boulder, Colo., Austin, Texas, Southern California Edison and Duke Energy Indiana are also planning smart grids or smart metering programs.

The federal government is getting on board, too. President Obama and Energy Secretary Steven Chu regularly talk about a smart grid future -- built by U.S. innovators. Congress this year has already invested $4 billion in smart grid technology in the stimulus package alone, and federal agencies are getting to work designing an overhaul of the power system.

Smart grid technology will eventually revolutionize how we generate, distribute and consume energy on both macro and micro levels.

To get there, however, the nation will have to get over some significant technological and institutional hurdles.

A Glimpse of the Power Grid's Future

Under the current power grid system, utilities don't learn about power outages until their customers call. Smart grids will be able to diagnose themselves, as well as monitor electricity demands in real time.

Smart grid technology will also allow customers to sell electricity they generate from rooftop solar panels and other renewable sources back into the system, which will be able to locally store energy and incorporate intermittent sources like wind and solar.

Using smart meters, customers will be able to monitor their electricity use online -- and get suggestions for minimizing it, either by turning certain appliances off or using them at different times. At the micro level, appliances themselves may use the smart grid’s intelligence. For instances, refrigerators may one day have chips that keep the ice maker from running during the heat of the day when air conditioners are also sapping power from the grid.

Increasing the efficiency of the electricity grid and adding smart metering could have a huge impact on energy use and consumer costs. In 2007, 9.4 percent of electricity generated was lost in transmission and distribution.

First, Writing the Rules of the Road

But wide implementation of smart grid technology is a while off. There are several large institutional challenges, including systemwide standards and interoperability. As Garry Brown, chairman of New York State Public Service Commission explains:

“If I let Utility A go one route and Utility B go the other route and Utility C a third, did I just set up a system in which three systems can’t talk to each other and the grid operator is not going to understand what is going on?”

The stimulus package gave $10 million to the National Institute for Standards and Technology to begin writing standards for the new power grid. NIST expects by year’s end to have Smart Grid standards that will ensure the interoperability of systems and appliances.

NIST is already working on a draft roadmap for smart grid development, and it plans a stakeholders summit May 19-20 in Washington. At a workshop last week, discussions focused on creating a system that encourages collaborative energy and efficiency, is transparent, secure, avoids congestion, and is loosely coupled, flexible and will last.

Safety and Synchronicity

Technologically, smart grid has two major challenges: how to integrate renewable energy sources and how to maintain cybersecurity.

The smart grid needs to be able to store renewable energy that is generated when demand is low and provide it to customers when demand is high. Right now, energy used at peak times tends to be inefficient and environmentally dirty. At the same time, the grid should be able to accommodate plug-in electric vehicles, which many anticipate will become more widely used.

The need for cybersecurity will also have to be balanced with the push for open standards, which would allow upgrades or changes to be made to the system with software changes, rather hardware substitutions.

“What we’re doing here is opening up two-way communications," Brown says. "We’re giving someone the ability to remotely turn a building on or off. If the wrong people get a hold of that power, we’ve got a real problem. We’d better get cybersecurity in the system as we build it."

Guido Bartels, general manager of IBM's Global Energy and Utilities, also notes a fundamental problem in the utility business model -- utilities lose money if the grid becomes more energy-efficient and consumers use less.

“If we do demand-side management and energy-efficiency and if utilities are going to sell less electricity, that needs to be supported by a certain business model and the whole regulatory environment,” he said. (In 1982, California successfully decoupled utility income from consumer use, resulting in the state’s per capita energy use remaining flat since then, whereas the per capita use in the rest of the country increased by 50% in the same time period.)

Consumers in the Driver's Seat

The problem is not just for government and utilities alone to solve.

"It’s a consumer opportunity," says Audrey Zibelman, president and CEO of Viridity Energy. "At the consumer side, you can have micro turbines, you can have electric cars, you can have the ability to automatically turn down your thermostat based on price and temperature.

"It turns one of the biggest variables on the system -- load, which is not predictable -- into something very predicable just like generation. So I think the smart grid will move past demand-response, which is, ‘Let’s turn off the lights when it’s really hot,’ to optimize our energy all the time and tell the person operating the grid how much electricity we plan to use tomorrow, because that will make a very efficient system.”

Because of how much control consumers will eventually have, businesses sense opportunity. A number of companies are introducing smart meter applications. Google announced in February that was developing an online Power Meter that allows users to track their home electricity use. Its engineers who are testing the equipment says they were able to quickly cut their electricity use as soon as they could pinpoint the power hogs.

Other business ideas may utilize smart grid in as-yet unimaginable ways.

“The best thing that will come out of smart grid is something we haven’t predicted yet,” Brown says. “And the best example I can give is the Blackberry after cell phones. When cell phones first were introduced, surveys showed cell phones would just be used as an emergency phone. Obviously the regulators were completely wrong.”

Obama Announces Stimulus Funding for the Smart Grid

Earlier today, President Obama spoke at the opening of what's now the largest photovoltaic power installation in the US, using the opportunity to announce the funding of a different energy project: the modernization of the US electric grid. The two might seem unrelated, but a report released earlier this year by the National Academies of Science indicated that grid modernization was essential of the country's use of renewable electricity was to rise above 20 percent of its total. The new projects would involve a total of $3.4 billion dollars of stimulus spending; with matching spending by utilities, the total commitment would reach over $8 billion, and fund the installation of over 5 million smart meters.

The funding has been in the works for a while, as the DOE solicited grant applications shortly after the stimulus bill was passed. But this is the first time that the projects that would be funded have been revealed (a list, broken down by category, is available).

A significant portion of the funding, $1 billion dollars, will be going to consumer-level technology, primarily smart meters. The project list indicates that well over 5 million smart meters should be installed. These devices will allow homeowners to receive fine-grained information about their energy use, in some cases on a per-appliance basis, and exert greater control over its timing. These devices will be most useful, from both a financial and grid perspective, when they're coupled with pricing that encourages use during off-peak hours, so some of the funding is going to help utilities transition to these pricing systems.

A larger chunk of the funding, $2 billion, will go toward putting the infrastructure in place to support these smart meters. The same sort of reporting and control provided by a smart meter can be provided at a variety of levels, allowing utilities to better handle issues like changes in demand, intermittent renewable power sources, and equipment malfunctions. In addition to getting the hardware in place, the utilities will be facing an enormous IT challenge, as the data has to be transmitted on secure networks, analyzed, archived, etc. The $2 billion will help cover these projects as well.

Another $400 million will be used to modernize transmission lines, both to limit the losses during transmission and to allow greater long-distance shuffling of power, "so that a wind farm in rural South Dakota can power homes in Chicago," as Obama put it. Another $25 million is going to foster the development of a smart device manufacturing capability.

In making the announcement, Obama claimed that the smart meters and demand-response pricing should enable consumers to save over $20 billion during the next decade, far exceeding the cost of the new program. He also suggested that the projects would increase grid reliability, limiting the $150 billion a year in economic losses suffered due to power outages.

All of that is generally good news, but the longer-term significance of this program may simply be to push smart metering and equipment out of the realm of test projects and into the mainstream. So far, smart meter deployments have been the rare exception on the US grid; if the program works as planned, nearly five percent of US households will have experience with them in the near future, and the utilities will have a wealth of real-world experience with the technology.

In that sense, a recent move by California may be equally significant. As part of a flurry of bill signings, Governor Schwarzenegger approved a smart grid measure that calls upon the state's Public Utilities Commission to come up with a plan for a state-wide smart grid deployment by July of next year (the bill's passage was spotted by Green Beat). Utilities would then have a year to come up with their own deployment plans, after which, presumably, the hardware would start to be put into place. California accounts for another 10 percent of the households in the US, so this has the potential to create an even larger impact than the stimulus spending.

Obama’s War on the Internet

The Ministry of Truth was how George Orwell described the mechanism used by government to control information in his seminal novel 1984. A recent trip to Europe has convinced me that the governments of the world have been rocked by the power of the internet and are seeking to gain control of it so that they will have a virtual monopoly on information that the public is able to access.

In Italy, Germany and Britain, the anonymous internet that most Americans are still familiar with is slowly being modified. If one goes into an internet café, it is now legally required in most countries in the European Union to present a government issued form of identification. When I used an internet connection at a Venice hotel, my passport was demanded as a precondition and the inner page, containing all my personal information, was scanned and a copy made for the Ministry of the Interior — which controls the police force. The copy is retained and linked to the transaction.

For home computers, the IP address of the service used is similarly recorded for identification purposes. All records of each and every internet usage, to include credit information and keystrokes that register everything that is written or sent, is accessible to the government authorities on demand, not through the action of a court or an independent authority. That means that there is, de facto, no right to privacy; and a government bureaucrat decides what can and cannot be “reviewed” by the authorities. Currently, the records are maintained for a period of six months, but there is a drive to make the retention period even longer.

The excuses being given for the increasing government intervention into the internet are essentially two:

1. First is that the anonymity of the internet has permitted criminal behavior, fraud, pornography, and libel.


2. Second is the security argument that managing the internet is an integral part of the “global war on terror” in that it is used by terrorists to plan their attacks, requiring governments to control those who use it.

The United States government takes the latter argument one step farther, claiming that the internet itself is a vulnerable “natural asset” that could be seized or damaged by terrorists and must be protected, making the case for a massive $100 billion program of cyberwarfare. Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) argues that “violent Islamist extremists” rely on the internet to communicate and recruit; and he has introduced a bill in the Senate that will empower the president to “kill” the internet in case of a national emergency.

But all of the arguments for intervention are essentially themselves fraudulent and are in reality being exploited by those who favor big government and state control.

The anonymity and low-cost nature of the internet means that it can be used to express views that are unpopular or unconventional, which is its strength. It is sometimes used for criminal behavior because it is a mechanism, not because there is something intrinsic in it that makes it a choice of wrongdoers. Before it existed, fraud was carried out through the postal service and over the telephone; pornography circulated freely by other means. As for the security argument, the tiny number of actual terrorists who use the internet do so because it is there and it is accessible. If it did not exist, they would find other ways to communicate, just as they did in pre-internet days. In fact, intelligence sources report that internet use by terrorists is rare because of persistent government monitoring of the websites.

The real reason for controlling the internet is to restrict access to information, something every government seeks to do.

If the American Departments of Defense, Homeland Security and Senator Lieberman have their way, new cybersecurity laws will enable Obama’s administration to take control of the internet in the event of a national crisis. How that national crisis might be defined would be up to the White House, but there have been some precedents that suggest that the response would hardly be respectful of the Bill of Rights.

Many countries already monitor and censor the internet on a regular basis, forbidding access to numerous sites that they consider to be subversive or immoral. During recent unrest, the governments of both Iran and China effectively shut down the internet by taking control of or blocking servers. Combined with switching off cell phone transmitters, the steps proved effective in isolating dissidents. Could it happen here? Undoubtedly.

Once the laws are in place, a terrorist incident, or something that could be plausibly described in those terms, would be all that is needed to have government officials issue the order to bring the internet to a halt.

But the ability to control the internet technically is only part of the story. Laws are being passed that criminalize expressing one’s views on the internet, including both “hate crime” legislation and broadly-drafted laws that make it a crime to support what the government describes loosely as terrorism in any way shape or form.

Regular extra-legal government intrusion in the private lives of citizens is already a reality, particularly in the so-called Western Democracies that have the necessary technology and tech-savvy manpower to tap phones and invade computers.

In Europe, draconian anti-terrorism laws enable security agencies to monitor phone calls and e-mails, in many cases without any judicial oversight. In Britain, the monitoring includes access to detailed internet records that are available for inspection by no less that 653 government agencies, most of which have nothing whatsoever to do with security or intelligence, all without any judicial review.

In the United States, the Pentagon recently sought an internet and news “instant response capability,” which it dubbed the Office of Strategic Influence; and it has also seeded a number of retired military analysts into the major news networks to provide a pro-government slant on the war news. The State Department is also in the game, tasking young officers to engage presumed radicals in debate on their websites, while the growing use of national security letters means that private communications sent through the internet can be accessed by Federal law enforcement agencies. The Patriot-Act-created national security letter does not require judicial oversight — more than 35,000 were issued by the FBI last year; and the recipient of a letter commits a felony if he or she reveals the receipt of the document. In a recent case involving an internet provider in Philadelphia, a national security letter demanded all details of internet messages sent on a certain date, to include account information on clients with social security numbers and credit card references.

The danger is real. Most Americans who are critical of the actions of their own government rely on the internet for information that is uncensored and often provocative, including sites like Campaign for Liberty.

As this article was being written, a story broke reporting that Wordpress-host Blogetery had been shut down by United States authorities along with all 73,000 Blogetery-hosted blogs. The company’s ISP is claiming that it had to terminate Blogetery’s account immediately after being ordered to do so by law enforcement officials “due to material hosted on the server.” The extreme response implies a possible presumed terrorist connection, but it is important to note that no one was charged with any actual offense, revealing that the government can close down sites based only on suspicion.

It is also likely only a matter of time before Obama’s internet warfare teams surface either at the Defense Department or at State. Deliberately overloading and attacking the internet to damage its credibility, witness the numerous sites that have been “hacked” and have had to cease or restrict their activities. But the moves afoot to create a legal framework to completely shut down the internet, and thereby control the “message,” are far more dangerous.

American citizens who are concerned about maintaining their few remaining liberties should sound the alarm and tell the politicians that we don’t need more government abridgement of our First Amendment rights.

Ten Ways We Are Being Tracked, Traced and Databased

The war on terror is a worldwide endeavor that has spurred massive investment into the global surveillance industry — which now seems to becoming a war on “liberty and privacy.” Given all of the new monitoring technology being implemented, the uproar over warrantless wiretaps now seems moot. High-tech, first-world countries are being tracked, traced, and databased literally around every corner. Governments, aided by private companies, are gathering a mountain of information on average citizens who so far seem willing to trade liberty for supposed security. Here are just some of the ways the matrix of data is being collected:

GPS

Global positioning chips are now appearing in everything from U.S. passports to cell phones to cars. More common uses include tracking employees and all forms of private investigation. Apple recently announced they are collecting the precise location of iPhone users via GPS for public viewing in addition to spying on users in other ways.

Internet

Internet browsers are recording your every move, forming detailed cookies on your activities. The NSA has been exposed as having cookies on their site that don’t expire until 2035. Major search engines know where you surfed last summer, and online purchases are databased, supposedly for advertising and customer service uses. IP addresses are collected and even made public. Controversial websites can be flagged internally by government sites, as well as re-routing all traffic to block sites the government wants to censor. It has now been fully admitted that social networks provide NO privacy to users while technologies advance for real-time social network monitoring. The Cybersecurity Act attempts to legalize the collection and exploitation of your personal information. Apple’s iPhone also has browsing data recorded and stored. All of this despite the overwhelming opposition to cyber-surveillance by citizens.

RFID

Forget your credit cards, which are meticulously tracked, or the membership cards for things so insignificant as movie rentals which require your SSN. Everyone has Costco, CVS, grocery-chain cards, and a wallet or purse full of many more. RFID “proximity cards” take tracking to a new level in uses ranging from loyalty cards, student ID, physical access, and computer network access. Latest developments include an RFID powder developed by Hitachi, for which the multitude of uses are endless — perhaps including tracking hard currency so we can’t even keep cash undetected. Traffic cameras

License plate recognition has been used to remotely automate duties of the traffic police in the United States, but have been proven to have dual use in England, such as to mark activists under the Terrorism Act. Perhaps the most common use will be to raise money and shore up budget deficits via traffic violations, but uses may descend to such “Big Brother” tactics as monitors telling pedestrians not to litter.

Computer cameras and microphones

The fact that laptops — contributed by taxpayers — spied on public school children (at home) is outrageous. Years ago Google officially began to use computer “audio fingerprinting” for advertising uses. They have admitted to working with the NSA, the premier surveillance network in the world. Private communications companies already have been exposed routing communications to the NSA. Now, keyword tools — typed and spoken — link to the global security matrix.

Public sound surveillance

This technology has come a long way from only being able to detect gunshots in public areas, to now listening in to whispers for dangerous “keywords.” This technology has been launched in Europe to “monitor conversations” to detect “verbal aggression” in public places. Sound Intelligence is the manufacturer of technology to analyze speech, and their website touts how it can easily be integrated into other systems.

Biometrics

The most popular biometric authentication scheme employed for the last few years has been Iris Recognition. The main applications are entry control, ATMs and Government programs. Recently, network companies and governments have utilized biometric authentication including fingerprint analysis, iris recognition, voice recognition, or a combination of these, for use in National identification cards.

DNA

Blood from babies has been taken for all people under the age of 38. In England, DNA was sent to secret databases from routine heel prick tests. Several reports have revealed covert Pentagon databases of DNA for “terrorists” and now DNA from all American citizens is databased. Digital DNA is now being used as well to combat hackers.

Microchips

Microsoft’s HealthVault and VeriMed partnership is to create RFID implantable microchips. Microchips for tracking our precious pets is becoming commonplace and serves to condition us to accept putting them in our children in the future. The FDA has already approved this technology for humans and is marketing it as a medical miracle, again for our safety.

Facial recognition

Anonymity in public is over. Admittedly used at Obama’s campaign events, sporting events, and most recently at the G8/G20 protests in Canada, this technology is also harvesting data from Facebook images; and it surely will be tied into the street “traffic” cameras.

All of this is leading to Predictive Behavior Technology — It is not enough to have logged and charted where we have been; the surveillance state wants to know where we are going through psychological profiling. It’s been marketed for such uses as blocking hackers.

Things seem to have advanced to a point where a truly scientific Orwellian world is at hand. It is estimated that computers know to a 93% accuracy where you will be, before you make your first move. Nanotech is slated to play a big role in going even further as scientists are using nanoparticles to directly influence behavior and decision making.

Many of us are asking: What would someone do with all of this information to keep us tracked, traced and databased? It seems the designers have no regard for the right to privacy and desire to become the Controllers of us all.

30 Chilling Facts Proving We The People Are Under Attack in an Undeclared War with the Rothschild League of Bankers:

1) The media is grossly censoring the extent of the devastation in the Gulf. The poisons--oil and chemical dispersant (Corexit)--are destined to spread globally, but honest reporting is restricted, and independent investigators are being arrested. This censorship is a sure sign of fascism--not freedom or democracy. In this way, the media, financially directed by leading investment bankers (cited below), accomplices this global poisoning.

2) The news and network "programming" is mind-controlling propaganda issued by the "partners" in the Rothschild League of Banks including Goldman-Sachs, JPMorgan-Chase and UBS that direct BP, Transocean, Halliburton, the clean-up capitalists, Corexit suppliers, even the trailers used by clean-up crews, through co-investors heavily represented in the Partnership for New York City (PFNYC), founded by David Rockefeller and chartered by the Royal Family of England. All together, these partners wield the most formidable economic power in world history.

3) Ongoing worsening environmental pollution has been a primary objective of these Rothschild League financiers since at least the 1960s, according to their leaked economic agenda. Destroying the environment, thus creating new global threats for remediation markets and emergency management is unconscionable, but very real. This has become a viable alternative to traditional warfare securing profitable population control through crisis capitalism.

4) The Gulf oil catastrophe reflects this one of three major financially-sustaining war substitutes. Currently, less urgent than environmental destruction is space-based threats (e.g., solar flares, alien menaces, and colliding asteroids). The third and least apparent profitable war substitute is petrochemical-pharmaceutical enslavement. All three of these incentives and objectives for global governance, emergency preparedness, and profitable military and Homeland Security responses,"carries the weight of . . . considerable actual sacrifice of life." 5) The propaganda ploy used most effectively in the Gulf, and in all crises, is to blame illusory villains to create sham debates. When Obama is blamed for the oil crisis, for instance, the "accident" faults Democrats. When Halliburton is blamed, the Republicans feel faulted. This divisive diversion suckers masses of idiots, discredits the media's intelligence, and shames people who still claim we have a"free" and "responsible" press.

6) The Deepwater Horizon (Mississippi Canyon 252) oil rig that exploded is the property of Transocean, not British Petroleum (BP); and both companies are financially directed by Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, and UBS investment bankers, all operating in the Rothschild League of banks.

7) Coincidentally, or demonically, the oil rig's failed cementation job exploded on Hitler's birthday, just in time to poison Earth Day 2010, thanks to Transocean's contractor--the infamous Dick Cheney/George Bush officiated Halliburton Company allied with Homeland Security.

8) Halliburton officials admit knowing their cementation job was likely to explode just when it did, according to Congressional testimony.

9) Goldman Sachs (GS) officials, likewise, knew the rig was likely to explode when it did. They bet millions of dollars on this event only days before it happened! (Lloyd Blankfein, CEO of GS, directed 44% [4.6 million shares] of BP stock to be dumped three weeks before the explosion.)

10) Not surprisingly, Transocean was merged into its current corporate state by Goldman-Sachs (a.k.a., "Government Sachs") in 2007.

11) David Sidwell, Risk Committee Chairman of UBS, the wealthiest Swiss bank (in the Rothschild League or alliance of so-called"competing" banks) and the world's largest wealth manager, also dumped BP stocks massively (i.e., 99% of the banks holdings, or 2.1 million shares,) as did Wachovia/Wells Fargo.

12) BP Oil CEO Tony Hayward sold 1/3 of his BP stock (223,288 shares) on March 17--a month before the explosion.

13) Just prior to 9/11, you may recall, Goldman Sachs did the same with airline stocks; and before the Gulf catastrophe, GS shorted mortgage company stocks, fueling the real estate collapse in America.

New Shocking Facts:

14) The Management Boards of the Eurex Stock Exchanges and the Executive Board of Germany's Eurex Clearing AG decided, on April 14, 2010, to introduce an equity option on shares of Transocean Ltd, effective on the day of the explosion, April 20, 2010. This gave inside traders a full day to dump their "uninsured" stock in Transocean at the highest price possible (before the rest of Wall Street responded to the explosion). Then the crisis capitalists were able to reinvest their funds, securing the higher price value.

These officials published zero reason for Transocean's new equity option program that encouraged banking criminals to use"protective puts" to make millions.

In other words, by paying a relatively small premium (compared to the soon-to-be plunging market value of Transocean stock), the Rothschild Leaguers knew no matter how far the stock dropped, it could be sold at the original "strike price" (also called the "put option") anytime before April 20, 2012.

This additionally evidences premeditated murder and the financial motives of the Swiss/German banking chiefs influencing Europe's most active stock exchanges. These inside traitors and industrial saboteurs, financially controlling Transocean, Halliburton, and BP, committed the gravest environmental crime of all time, with obvious plans to profit from the mass murdering of people and destruction of the Gulf.

15) This was how money was made from the obvious sabotage. After UBS sold its 2.1 million shares of BP, prior to the explosion, the "put option" policy on BP stock was similarly exercised when UBS bought back 8.6 million BP shares by June 7.

16) Transocean Vice President of Marketing, Terry Bonno, met UBS officials on May 27, 2010, according to a heavily censored Thompson Reuter's report and transcript. The "Ultra-Deepwater market will start to pick up longer-term," Bonno encouraged banking officials.

17) So within weeks of the explosion the Rothschild League of investment bankers were yelling "Buy! Buy! Buy! BP stock," stating the costs for clean-up were miniscule compared to what their investments and company profits would earn.

18) This quote detailed the BP-banking-stock-jocks' plot:"Buying shares today while writing $55 calls and "puts" for the January 2012 expiration allows for an outstanding cash-on-cash return if BP merely bounces back by 14% over the next 21 months. In a best case you'll net 98% total returns on the actual cash outlay (assuming you write the puts against paid-up marginable equity already held in your margin-type account)."

19) Much like the instantly-manufactured equity investment option created for Transocean right before the explosion, BP's stock insurance plan secured the ongoing devastation in the Gulf with this financial promise: "In a worst case scenario you'll end up with twice the number of BP ADRs at an average cost of $42.64 or less," stock gurus promoted. "That's lower than the annual lows for BP during the entire period 2004 right through 2007."

Proud Profiteers in Media Magic

The wizards of oil, pulling the strings behind the media's propaganda, are best exemplified by Goldman Sachs's CEO, Lloyd Blankfein. Lloyd merged, and still largely controls, ABC/Disney and Miramax. Blankfein's partner, co-chairing the PFNYC, is Rupert Murdoch, controlling FOX News, Time-Warner, Associated Press, News Corp and much more. Another partner in this David Rockefeller-founded PFNYC cabal is Thompson Reuters chairman, Thomas Glocer. The PFNYC was responsible for financial reconciliations from 9-11, and "veering" World Trade Center reconstruction money from New York to Las Vegas through Apollo Management's MGM private equity investments. (Apollo co-owns Nalco/Corexit with Goldman Sachs.) The PFNYC was chartered by Britain's Royal family, bringing NBC/Comcast into their stead, as well as the General Electric company. Last but not least, CBS owner, Sumner Murray Rothstein (Redstone), joined the clique through his CBS-Viacom stable of companies.

20) The Halliburton cementation job's sabotage, and resulting oil hemorrhage in the Gulf, served perfectly, synchronously and financially to "veer" media attention away from Lloyd Blankfein's/ Goldman-Sachs's shorting of the American housing market, accelerating the planned economic collapse of the USA for the forthcoming New World Order's "New Deal."

21) And just when we thought the Government Sachs connection to the Gulf oil rigging could not get any deeper, we learn that GS holds controlling interests (with Apollo Management) in the Nalco Company which produces the hideously deadly oil dispersant named Corexit!

22) The Rothschild Leaguers "ruled out all [Corexit] competitors even those that have shown to be far less toxic and, in some cases, nearly twice as effective," reported Paul Quinlan in the New York Times. The reason being . . .

23) Nalco formed from a joint venture with the David Rockefeller-controlled Exxon Chemical Co. in 1994. Then, . . .

24) In 2003, The Blackstone Group, Apollo Management L.P., and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, bought Ondeo Nalco for $4.3 billon dollars. All three companies are partnered in the Rockefeller-founded, Royal Family-chartered PFNYC.

25) Ironically, according to Nalco's website, the company is portrayed as a water, energy and air conservation corporation. They claim to be the world's leading water treatment company. Their poisonous dispersant, Corexit, is not their main business. It is a "first aid product that they've always had and they've never really used."

26) Corexit was found poisoning clean-up workers, causing kidney and liver disorders, following its debut in the 1989 Exxon-Valdez disaster. Nalco blamed these problems on 2-butoxyethanol, now claimed to have been removed.

And that's not all. . . .

27) The George Bush/Dick Cheney 9/11-linked Halliburton Company purchased the world's largest oil-spill cleanup entity, Boots & Coots, three weeks before the "natural gas leak." This was synchronous with the bankers beginning to unload BP and Transocean stocks, and securing equity options to insure their investments. Other major shareholders in Nalco/Corexit include billionaire Warren Buffett and his conglomerate holding company, Berkshire Hathaway; and Maurice Strong, Al Gore, George Soros.

28) Historically, Homeland Security has contracted with Halliburton to provide detention camps for political dissidents and displaced populations, through KBR, whose financial underwriters feature the aforementioned war-makers: Credit Suisse Securities (USA) LLC; Goldman, Sachs & Co.; UBS Securities LLC; Citigroup Global Markets Inc.; and Wachovia Capital Markets, LLC--the precise financial institutions shorting BP and Transocean stocks as detailed above.

29) Homeland Security's choice of accommodations for Gulf oil clean-up crews are the same toxic trailers banned from use during Hurricane Katrina.

30) Homeland Security medical officials are also now implicated in fraudulently promoting (through Alex Jones) a "decoy product" for infectious disease markets called Silver Sol for profit and probably depopulation as well.

Conclusion and Solution

Similar to what we found while investigating the fabricated H1N1-H5N1 Swine Flu fright and fraudulent (and increasingly threatening) vaccination campaign, the devil-doers were those in control of the "Pharma Media" involving Wall Street's heaviest hitters, all partners in the PFNYC and the Rothschild League of investment bankers. We The People urgently need a new banking system that entirely excludes the aforementioned criminals. It must encourage investments in permaculture and sustainable production, not destructive and polluting consumption. It must discourage petrochemical-pharmaceutical toxicity that is killing us and most other species. And it must invest in suppressed alternative energies, including hydrogen fuel and Tesla technologies that have been kept from common use by the financial paradigm makers/enslavers.

The new banking system must value biological sensitivity, and love-based spirituality, more than lust for money, fueling a degenerative economy that is based on usury.

One suggested solution is to form a posse to search and find leaders in this criminal banking cartel (such as Lloyd Blankfein and David Rockefeller) and serve them, and responding law enforcers, with citizens' arrest complaints, widely publicized, using this article and its links as evidence detailing the criminal conspiracy. This way, attorneys general may be forced to do their jobs in protecting We The People.

Otherwise, we need a miracle to stop the financial industry from doing what is it is doing to us and our planet. This is not a religious statement, just an accurate observation.
